McAfee installation problems are usually caused by conflicting antivirus software, corrupted download files, insufficient system permissions, or the McAfee Sustainability Framework error. The fix is to remove conflicting software using McAfee's Pre-Install Tool, then download a fresh copy of McAfee from your account portal.

Step-by-Step Fix for McAfee Installation Problems
Step 1: Remove Conflicting Antivirus Software
Having two antivirus programs installed at the same time causes conflicts that prevent McAfee from installing. Before installing McAfee, uninstall all other antivirus software including Norton, Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, or any other security software.
- Go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program
- Find any antivirus or security software in the list
- Right-click and select Uninstall
- Restart your computer after uninstalling
Step 2: Use the McAfee Pre-Install Tool (MCPR)
If a previous McAfee installation is causing conflicts, run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR) to completely clean up any previous McAfee files before reinstalling.
- Download the MCPR tool from McAfee's official support page
- Close all browsers and programs
- Run the MCPR tool as Administrator (right-click > Run as Administrator)
- Follow the on-screen prompts and restart your computer when prompted
Step 3: Download a Fresh McAfee Installer
- Log in to your McAfee account at mcafee.com
- Go to My Account > My Downloads
- Download the latest McAfee installer for your product
- Do not use an old installer file — always download fresh
Step 4: Run the Installer as Administrator
Many installation errors occur because Windows did not grant McAfee the permissions it needs. Always run the McAfee installer with administrator rights.
- Locate the downloaded installer file (usually in your Downloads folder)
- Right-click the installer file
- Select Run as administrator
- Click Yes when Windows asks for permission
Step 5: Temporarily Disable Windows Firewall and Defender
Windows Defender and Firewall can sometimes block the McAfee installer. Temporarily disable them during installation:
- Open Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection > Manage Settings
- Toggle Real-time protection to Off temporarily
- Also go to Firewall & Network Protection and turn off the firewall temporarily
- Run the McAfee installer
- Re-enable Windows Defender and Firewall after McAfee installs successfully
Fix: McAfee Download Not Starting
If the McAfee download will not start from your account portal:
- Try a different browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox)
- Disable your browser's pop-up blocker for mcafee.com
- If using a VPN, disconnect it and try again
- Clear your browser cache and cookies
- Check that you have enough free disk space (minimum 1.5 GB recommended)
