Common McAfee Alerts and What They Mean
‘Threat Detected’ or ‘Virus Found’
McAfee found malware on your PC. The threat has been quarantined (isolated) automatically. Click the alert to see details, then click ‘Remove’ or ‘Delete’ to permanently remove the threat. If the same threat keeps reappearing, run a Full Scan.
‘Real-Time Scanning is Off’
McAfee’s main protection feature has been disabled. Click the alert and turn real-time scanning back on immediately. If it won’t stay on, update McAfee or reinstall.
‘Firewall is Off’
McAfee’s firewall is disabled. Click the alert to re-enable it. Your PC is at increased risk until it’s restored.
‘Subscription Expires Soon’
Your McAfee subscription is due for renewal. Not urgent but renew before the expiry date to maintain uninterrupted protection.
‘Your Information Was Found in a Data Breach’
McAfee’s identity monitoring detected that your email address appears in a known data breach. Change the passwords for the affected accounts immediately and enable two-factor authentication.
Are McAfee Browser Pop-Ups Real?
Important: Legitimate McAfee alerts appear as Windows desktop notifications or within the McAfee app. Pop-ups appearing in your web browser claiming to be from McAfee (especially those showing a virus count or asking you to call a number) are SCAMS. Close them immediately without clicking anything.
